So 2012 has been and gone, and the New Year is here. Huh-flippin-rah . I’m sorry to say this but, quite frankly, you 2012, were somewhat of a let down. Don’t misunderstand, we did have some good times at the start; we had some fun, did stuff together, had a few laughs. But then things started to turn sour, didn’t they. And by the end you were pushing my buttons on a daily basis. In short, you turned out to be a bit of a git. And after such a promising courtship… so sad.

Perhaps that’s why I’m a little delayed in posting the round-up of my year; I needed some time to pick through the bad bits and find the good bits (they were there, they were just squashed between the rubbish stuffs). Or perhaps it’s because I’m still in a post-Christmas lull, and have been making the most of having my brain switched off for a while. Either way, I’m here now, and ready to get this round-up under way .

So, about this time last year, I embarked on my challenge for 2012 – my year of ‘somethings’. Each month I was going to try something I’d either a) never done, b) always wanted to do, c) wanted to work on, or d) that scared the cupcake out of me (check out my blog post Up to Something for full details of how it all came about). I had a list of ideas, some leads, and 12 months ahead of me, so seemed feasible that I could at least achieve some of them… right? The 12 months is up. Did I pull it off? Well, if you’ve been popping into my blog during the year, you’ll already have a good idea of the answer . But shall we see how well I did? Sure, why not. My ‘Somethings of 2012′, in Chronological order. Drum roll please. Here we go…

January:

Watched some ‘classic’ movies: After years of shocked faces when I reveal I haven’t seen apparent classics, I kicked off the year by watching four: It’s a Wonderful Life, Singin’ in the Rain, Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version) and An Affair to Remember. I really enjoyed them all .
Went to the cinema: Only the oldest working cinema in the UK I’ll have you know! The beautiful grade II listed Duke of York’s Picture house in Brighton. And what a gem. If you haven’t been, and you’re ever in Brighton, go visit. You won’t be disappointed. And they have the comfiest seats ever!
Attended a launch party: After being invited to the launch of the London office of hugely successful internet holiday home rental company AirBnB. Fun night, if a bit random! And I did get some freebies…
Trialled a fitness bootcamp: This seemed like a good idea at the time. A few days later, it seemed less like a good idea; so much pain! But it was a no-obligation free trial day, so it totally counts .

February:

Registered as an Organ Donor: Probably the greatest thing I will ever do. If you aren’t registered as a donor, do it. Do it now: Organ Donor Registration.
Joined a weekly yoga class: This started as a bet with a friend, but I hoped it would help with my insomnia & stress. And I think it did. Sadly, the class was cancelled in September, and I haven’t found a new one yet .
Went on a jewellery making course: Using magical clay that turns into sterling silver! And my finished article? A pretty little necklace that I made all myself – yay!

March:

Went on a CreativeJS coding course: Run by my talented friend Seb Lee-Delisle, I tried my hand at being a nerd for a few days. I didn’t get round to creating his trademark particle systems like the rest of my class mates, having spent the entire course making this slightly wobbly bunny. I’m not sure that’s exactly what Seb had in mind after two days of exhausting teaching, but at least I can say I coded it myself. Sort of .
Made-over my website: Probably as a result of the above geekery, I spent a few days tweaking my website, and launched this shiny new version at the end of the month.

April:

Went to the theatre: Not so much of a big deal usually, but this was the first time I had gone to the theatre by myself (in London no less), which, for me, was kinda huge! I even splashed out on a pre-theatre dinner at a very swanky restaurant, which seemed very extravagant, and unnecessary, and therefore completely awesome. And the show, “All New People”, was excellent. Could my enjoyment of it possibly have been influenced by the writer and star of the play, swoon-worthy Scrubs actor Zach Braff? Um, maybe. Just a little… .

June:

Went on a professional massage course: Something I’ve always wanted to do and, thanks to a one-day course from The College of Classical Massage, I finally did. And it was brilliant! Have even been considering going on their full diploma course, and getting qualified as a practitioner of massage .

July:

Went llama trekking in Surrey: Yup, it’s exactly as it sounds. I found a place tucked away in the Surrey Hills that takes people out llama trekking. It was ridiculous, but really a lot of fun! Check them out if you fancy doing something a little bit different: Surrey Llama Trekking.

October:

Had an operation: Ok, yes, going in for surgery was not on my list of things to do when I first drew it up last January. At that stage I had no idea that I’d even be needing an operation! But as it was something I’d never done before (and, as it turned out, scared me witless!) I think it’s earned the right to go on the list. And I’m recovering well, thanks for asking .

November:

Had play dates with cats & dogs: In an attempt to help me face my longstanding fear of these furry critters, I arranged play dates with some friends pets. It went much better than I expected, I even pet all the terrifying blighters, right on their faces! How brave am I?! . More dates are on the horizon this year, with even more cats and dogs. Watch this space!
Climbed the O2 Arena: Having spent a month on rest duties (courtesy of my surgeon) I was itching to get out and move. So I did. 52 metres skywards – and at angles of 30 degrees in some places! – over the top of the O2 Arena. It was exhilarating, and breathtaking, and bouncy. Very, very bouncy. And I looked amazing in my climbsuit . You gotta do it: Up at the O2.

December:

Went open-air Ice Skating: Having wanted to do this for years (but always chickened out because I can’t skate!), I decided I wasn’t going to let a silly thing like that hold me back this year! So I booked up a session at the stunning Somerset House in London, and with much support from my lovely ice guide Steve, I effortlessly glided round the rink for an hour. Well, ok, not quite effortlessly, but I didn’t fall down once . Not bad for a newbie.
Went on a Spa weekend: Just the ticket for a pre-Christmas, end of year treat, particularly as the last 6 months have been pretty difficult. And if you’re gonna Spa, do it right (especially if you’re a first timer like me). So there was only one place to go; Thermae Bath Spa. And it was bliss. Getting away distracted my brain, and the spa soothed my body. Exactly what I needed. The yummy food treats I had were pretty ok too…
Rode a horse: I’d planned to do this in the summer, but for one reason or another it didn’t really happen. It was pure dumb luck that I found a pony trekking farm just outside of Bath when I was booking up my Spa weekend. And even more dumb luck when their trekking times fit around my other plans. I found being on a horse a very weird experience, not one that I can easily put into words. But I kinda liked it . I wonder how I’d feel if I was actually in control of the horse? Perhaps that’s the next step..!
Had a haircut: Yes, this can’t technically be considered a ‘something’, because I’ve had haircuts before, obviously. And although some trips to the hairdressers can be scary (Supercuts anyone!?!), I have finally found a great hairdresser and colourist who somehow manage to make me look incredible (until I step out the salon door, typically). So, New Year, new do. And it’s my list, so I can put on it whatever I want .
Watched some classic movies: I ended the year – and my ‘somethings’ – as I had started, by watching some more classic movies, this time going for Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version). And they were all really great! Who knew?! Next up, a friend has recommended some Hitchcock thrillers (no shower scenes and swarms of birds for me thanks!).

And there we have it. My ‘somethings’ of 2012. Quite a diverse little group of things, huh? Sadly, I didn’t quite manage something every month – thank you stupid illness – but I did nearly everything from my original list, with some extra’s throw in along the way! That’s pretty good going I think .

So, 2012, once the New Year dust has settled, will I look back on you and remember you fondly? Hmm. No. For a lot of reasons, I can’t really shake the feeling that you have been one huge thorn in my side from start to finish, and I am positively giddy to see the back of you. But I won’t let 12 crappy months diminish the ‘somethings’ I’ve achieved. Or stop me looking at things I’d like to do this year. I may have already started working on a new list…

New Year. New hair. New start… But same stupid face . Deep breath, here we go…

Urgh. It’s been a rough couple of months . Well, you guys know, I’ve not been having that great a time of it recently. And I’ll admit, I’ve been feeling pretty sorry for myself as a result. But Christmas is here – yay! – and I have a long break from work for the first time in years – double yay! – so things are looking up, at least for the next few weeks .

So, out with my Grinchy mood, and time to get into the spirit of the festive season; gift giving, over indulging and relaxing until almost comatose. Yup, that all seemed fairly achievable . And if I could get in my last ‘somethings’ of the year, all the better! Well, thanks to my awesome coordination and organisational skills, I got it all wrapped up in one lovely pre-Christmas mini break .

As a reward to myself for getting through the past few months in (almost) one piece, I decided to book a short trip away. It would serve as reward too for my husband, for burdening the stress and putting up with my terrible mood – I really have no idea how he does it! A change of scenery was needed, and lots of pampering, so I headed to the most logical destination – Bath. Ah Bath, I’ve been wanting to visit you for years. Friends who have stayed have always told me nice things about the city, and the lure of the famous natural thermal waters was just too great to resist! I found a lovely Georgian apartment in the centre of the city, arranged some treatments at the gorgeous Thermea Spa and we headed down for a long weekend of rest and relaxation. And it was bliss! Sightseeing – check. Shopping – check. Eating way too much – check. Invigorating salt scrub – check. Relaxing massage – check. Floating in the über cool rooftop pool and playing in the bubble jets like a big kid… at night – CHECK!

Image courtesy of Thermae Bath Spa

A Spa day! That’s one of the ‘somethings’ from my list, now successfully ticked off… and how! What a great day of complete indulgence and pampering. Whether you’re feeling run down, stressed out, or just want to treat yourself – and lets face it, we all deserve a treat now and then! – book yourself some time at a spa. Any spa. I guarantee, you’ll absolutely love it! And if you’re ever in Bath and get the opportunity, go to Thermae Bath Spa, and head straight up to the roof. The pool is, quite simply, delicious. And the views of the city are breathtaking.

So, with spa day and sightseeing done (a trip to Bath wouldn’t be complete without visiting the stunning Roman Baths and trying the hot spa water at The Pump Rooms), there was little more than eating and shopping left on our getaway’s to-do list. Heavenly. It wasn’t great that it had rained from the moment we arrived, and continued to do so for the next 12 hours, but that wasn’t going to dampen our spirits. Hell no! Probably because we were still a bit blissed-out from our massages, or giddy from all the rich food we’d eaten . But there was still one last thing to do before we headed home (besides load the car with lots of tasty goodies that is!). My last ‘something’ of the year. And one of the first to go on the list when I started thinking about it over a year ago. No pressure for it to be good then…

I have no idea where it came from. Or why I felt so strongly that I wanted to do this particular ‘something’. But hey, who ever has any real clue what goes on in their head, huh? Let’s just call it a quirky anomaly :). There was a clue for this last ‘something’ in the title of this post. But in case you missed it (or you can’t be bothered to scroll up) I think this photo says it all really. And yes, it was good .

A huge thanks to the lovely folk at Wellow Trekking Centre for taking me – a complete novice! – out for a fun ride through the beautiful Avon countryside. And thanks too to Katie, my 15 hands high transport for the morning, for not throwing me off, or doing anything too scary! Although the trotting did unnerve me a little .

So, that’s it. My final ‘something’ of 2012. And what a nice way to finish up . I’m sure I’ll be doing a full round-up of the year in a post next week but right now my feet are up, a festive film is just kicking off on the telly box, and I’m thinking of delving into the secret food stash a day early. Well, it is Christmas after all… .

Ah December, what a contrary month you are. Your dark, freezing mornings (and equally dark, freezing rest-of-the-day!) leave me with a severe case of the S.A.Ds, and wishing I were a hibernatory creature, so that I could curl myself up in a warm, snuggly spot until the spring. But then you lure me out of your gloom with oh so many pretty, shiny lights! You offer me presents, and tell me its more than okay to stuff my face with chocolate at every available opportunity. You make frosty mornings and snowfalls seem idyllic and playful, and I’m sucked in every time. Until, that is, I take my first skipped steps into your wintry wonderland, and remember that it’s flippin’ freezin’ out there, and I don’t like the cold! You’re a sly month, December. A very sly month. And I’m never quite sure what to make of you. But I do know this… I love Christmas .

Now, this thinking that Christmas is just for kids – pah! I’m not buying it. Don’t get me wrong, when you’re little, Christmas seems like a very magical time, and it is! But if anything, I enjoy it even more now I’m a (sort of) grown-up. I can buy all the chocolates that I like, and not have to worry about sharing them with my siblings – result! I can cook whatever I want for Christmas dinner – I’m not a fan of the turkey – and totally remove the issue that is repeated turkey themed meals until New Years. I can pick out my own tree and, as is the tradition in my house, name it accordingly (for those of you interested, this year he’s called Sven). I can choose if I want to spend any of my festive time off with relatives or not, which surely has to be one of the main advantages to being a grown-up! And this 31-year-old still insists on an advent calendar every year. It’s a Christmas essential people, regardless of age .

It’s around this time in December when I start feeling really Christmassy. Our tree goes up around the second weekend of the month, we start receiving Christmas cards, we’ve done the majority of our festive food shopping, and I am wrapping presents left, right and centre, with gay abandon. In Christmases past, this has been enough to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But this year – my year of ‘somethings’ – I had plans afoot that would give me some extra cheer… as long as I didn’t chicken (or should that be turkey?) out…

Every year, when I’m out and about, laden with bags full of presents (some for friends/family, most for me…), I see them. White and shiny, teeming with happy, blurry faces. Some are whizzing around, some falling down, and some are holding onto the sides, just watching. But all are having a blast. I envy the happy, blurry faced people. I want to be one of them. I want to ice skate!

I completely blame Christmas marketing for this need. I have little desire to tie boots with pointy bits onto my feet and then go round and round in circles on frozen water at any other time of the year. But come December, I see the open air rinks popping up, drawing me in their pretty pictures of clichéd festive scenes; beautiful people with beautiful smiles skating in beautiful locations. Damn you marketing geniuses! I WANT! And this isn’t the first year I’ve tried to get my skate on. Last year I tried. Twice! Once at Hyde Park, and a few weeks later at Brighton Pavilion. But I only got as far as watching. You see, there is a slight technical hitch with wanting to go Christmas ice skating… I can’t skate! I have been skating before, when I was about 8. I was invited to a skating party where I was given a pair of skates, pointed towards the rink and told to “go!”. Helpful. I spent the entire time holding onto the safety barriers, pulling myself round the edge whilst my accomplished skating ‘friends’ had a whale of a time in the middle of the ice. Nice. So I had a few skating demons to exorcise. Thank goodness for my year of ‘somethings’ to give me the extra push I needed to grab the ice skates by the laces and just do it! It did, I did, and I had a great time .

Now, I may be a noob when it comes to skating, but I’m not a complete idiot. I wasn’t going to completely embarrass myself in front of a load of strangers – hells no! And certainly not at the venue I had chosen for my Christmas ice skating debut – the simply stunning Somerset House. So I did what any sensible person would do; I invited my friends (also skating noobs) along to share in any embarrassment. And to have fun, of course . Genius idea! Well, it was, until none of them could make it come the day . This did slap me in the face slightly, but I’d already booked my ticket, and my skate guide (a-ha! Another genius idea to minimise any possible skating awkwardness!), so there was no question of me not going. And I’m so glad I did! Despite some last-minute nerves when waiting in the skate room – surrounded by families, groups of friends and couples, wondering what the hell I was doing there, Billy-no-mates as I was – once I met my super lovely ice guide Steve and took those first clumsy steps onto the ice, I was too busy concentrating to be nervous. Although not officially skating instructors, ice guides are described as being able to “provide useful assistance for novice skaters who need extra support”. That couldn’t have been more on the money for Steve, who literally was my extra support for my one hour session. Poor guy; his hand must have been so sore, my having squeezed it quite hard for the majority of our time together; oops! He very politely shrugged off my concerns about his hand, telling me hilarious stories about other ‘novices’ (worse than me, apparently) that he’s guided round the ice, none of which I can possibly divulge. But take it from me, they were hysterical!

An hours session seems like an extraordinarily long time when you have no idea what to expect, and the nerves are kicking into high gear. But it really flew by, much like the countless people who attempted to jinx my staying upright-ness by nosediving in front of me with annoying regularity. Hey, people, stop messing up my skating mojo with your falling down; it’s really inconsiderate…

In between avoiding the trippers, the slippers and the over-the-toppers, and on the rare occasion I released Steve’s hand from my death grip, I took a few snaps of my time on the ice:

The official photographer even got a couple of shots of me getting my skate on. Ok, ok, getting my wobble on then… :

Gliding with such ease and grace.

Wow. What a fun way to spend a Saturday morning; effortlessly gliding round the ice, in the beautiful winter sunshine, with that as a backdrop! Well, ok, not quite effortlessly gliding. More like awkward stop-starting, with a lot of help from Steve. But still, I really enjoyed it .

By the time I had to come off the ice, I’d witnessed several spectacular falls, lots of showboating, and even a proposal (she said yes by the way)! But mostly I’d just seen people having a great time; hanging out with friends and family, getting into the festive spirit and being really friendly to complete strangers. It seems like Christmas really is the season of goodwill to all men . A guy I’d meet on the way in flew past me at one point screaming “Hey! It’s you! You’re doing really wellllllllllllllllllllllllllll!”. Aw. Thanks Mr Leicester City hat! You scared the shit out of me, and I nearly fell over, but thanks! I even got some compliments on my progress from Steve: “You’re much more confident than you were when we first started. You’re actually quite good… when you don’t think about what you’re doing!”. Hehe. Yup, that’s been said before Steve, but thanks . And I managed to get through the entire session without falling over once – yay!

So, if you can, get your skates on, and get out there! What could be more Christmassy than a spot of outdoor ice skating huh? And there are so many great ones all over the place, so give it a go. And don’t forget, you can easily reason your way to eating that extra mince-pie after all the calories you’ll burn on the ice – it’s hard work trying not to fall down for an hour! So do it. And have that extra mince-pie. I insist .
